It is located approximately 35 miles east of Pittsburgh and has a total land area of 4.2 square miles. Greensburg is the largest city in Westmoreland County and holds the county seat. There are upwards of 15,900 people residing in the city, however, the population nearly doubles during daytime working hours. The city of Greensburg ranks seventh in Pennsylvania in terms of daytime growth behind Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, Harrisburg, King of Prussia, Lancaster and State College.
Greensburg is Westmoreland County’s major business and cultural center and is perceived as “downtown” for the Central Westmoreland County area. Over the past several years, recent improvements have been made to enhance the visual appearance of the downtown area. The Westmoreland Cultural Trust, an organization created to take on a leadership role in the development and enhancement of Greensburg’s cultural life and economic well being, played a major role in the revitalization of the Downtown area. Seton Hill University, one of the area’s higher education institutes, recently completed a multi-million dollar expansion project to further enhance the city’s cultural center with a specialized center for music, art and theater students. As the county seat, the City of Greensburg hosts a variety of events and activities throughout the year. Fairs, festivals, summer concerts, house tours and holiday parades are all yearly events on the City’s calendar. The Westmoreland Cultural Trust, as well as The Palace Theatre and The Westmoreland Museum of American Art, make up a large part of the city’s cultural entertainment. The Greensburg Recreation Department offers a variety of seasonal sports activities for children including baseball, soccer, swimming, tennis, football, figure skating, cheerleading and more. SummerSounds Concerts in the Park is the City of Greensburg’s outdoor summer concert series. Concerts are held Friday evenings, from June through August, in St. Clair Park and feature talented local, national and international artists. Concerts are made possible through the City of Greensburg and Hempfield Township, major sponsors, charitable foundations and the generosity of many local businesses. Concerts are free and open to the public and have proven to be a great way to relax, unwind and kick off the weekend. Downtown Greensburg is also home to a number of quaint, 1950 style retail shops and restaurants that attract residents and visitors. City Hall, a post office, a community library, a train station and a bus station are all located within the city limits. |
